President-elect Joe Biden has chosen Tom Vilsack as Agriculture secretary, reports the Des Moines Register. Vilsack served as Agriculture secretary under the Obama administration for eight years and has been a longtime supporter of Biden.
"With an estimated one in six Americans and a quarter of U.S. children facing a hunger crisis, farmers reeling, and rural communities struggling to weather the pain and economic fallout of the pandemic, Vilsack will bring the experience and bold thinking needed to deliver immediate relief to farmers, ranchers, producers and families all across the country," Biden said in a news release.
Iowa Democratic Party Chairman Mark Smith said that Vilsack will help provide "steady, united leadership as we face the greatest challenges in a generation,” and that he is "a proven public servant whose empathy, compassion and decades of knowledge are near-unparalleled,” who will bring "immediate relief to our beleaguered farmers, workers and families across the country who have been left behind."
