Online sellers had the biggest surges in sales on Black Friday, hitting record numbers during the holiday shopping season, reports Newsday. A record $6.2 billion was spent online on the shopping day, a 23.6 percent increase from 2017, according to RetailNext. Meanwhile, brick-and-mortar stores saw heavy traffic, but down from past years.
One factor that contributed to the holiday shopping boom online was more blended retail, such as shoppers browsing for merchandise in stores before making online purchases from smartphones to avoid long checkout lines. For Thanksgiving and Black Friday, preliminary numbers show between a 4 percent and 7 percent decrease in sales in-store, and declines in foot traffic in the range of 5 percent to 9 percent.
