Six years after Hurricane Sandy, Madelaine Chocolate Co. is back, reports Crain's New York Business. Within hours of being hit by the storm, water destroyed hundreds of thousands of pounds of chocolate and holiday boxes at Madelaine's, as well as new machines. CEO Jorge Farber says the devastation of the facility was total. After the flooding, co-owners Farber and Normal Gold were debating whether to rebuild.
Their customer base was asking them to come back, and they had loyal employees and local officials to offer a hand. Today, eight of Madelaine's original 14 lines are up and running. Lines don't run 24/7 as they used to, but now the company produces between 8 million and 9 million pounds of chocolate each year. The 69-year-old company gives a lot of credit for its recovery to the regional Small Business Administration office, which provided $527 million in loans to local businesses. Full Story
