Consuming crickets may improve one's microbiome and reduce inflammation, according to a small pilot trial published in Scientific Reports, reports HealthDay. The trial focused on cricket powder and found that Bifidobacterium animalis, a bacteria linked to better gut function, flourished on the diet. The study found although insects are novel to the American diet, they contain nutrients and fibers that could benefit overall health in the country.
The study authors indicated more research was needed to better understand the effects of the diet on one's body, and those who are allergic to shellfish could be allergic to crickets, as well, according to the report. Full Story
