An antitrust lawsuit was filed against the Dairy Farmers of America in federal court, challenging its acquisition of the majority of Dean Foods’ assets, reports Food Dive. The complaint, filed by Food Lion and the Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative Association, claims that DFA is “an aspiring monopolist” that will either put small cooperatives and independent dairy farmers out of business or force them to join the DFA.
The suit claims that North and South Carolina will be particularly in danger. "With capability to wield market power at two levels of the supply chain, DFA now has both the ability and the incentive to wipe out any remaining pockets of competition," the suit said. Full Story
