The governors of California, Ohio, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Washington have closed bars and restaurants in an effort to slow the spread of coronavirus, reports USA Today. Mayors of major cities across the U.S., including New York City, Nashville, and New Orleans have ordered similar restrictions.
In Ohio, Gov. Mike DeWine said bars and restaurants can stay open for carry-out and delivery, but dine-in operations must cease. In California, Gov. Gavin Newsome said that all bars, wineries, brew pubs, and nightclubs should close, and he asked those over 65 to self-isolate. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti followed suit, saying he was closing bars, restaurants, nightclubs, and entertainment venues effective at midnight on Sunday until at least March 31.
Illinois has also shut down bars and restaurants for dine-in customers through March 30. “There are no easy decisions left to make as we address this unprecedented crisis,” Gov. JB Pritzker said Sunday, according to media reports. “As your governor, I can’t allow the gravity of these decisions from taking the measures that the science and the experts say will keep people safe.”
Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker ordered all bars and restaurants closed for a month starting March 17. New York City will also close nightclubs, theaters, and concert venues by March 17, and restaurants and bars in the city will be limited to serving only takeout and delivery.
In Pennsylvania, Gov. Tom Wolf ordered restaurants and bars across Allegheny, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties to close dine-in facilities beginning today. Nashville Mayor John Cooper has asked all bars to close on Lower Broadway and has severely restricted restaurant capacity. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell also announced that all restaurants would need to close by 9 p.m. and bars and nightclubs by midnight, in addition to being limited to a 50 percent capacity.
