Pea farmers who have been hit by tariffs and low prices are benefiting from the increase in plant-based meat products, reports CNBC. For example, Cargill has recently invested $100 million in pea protein producer Puris Foods to help increase production and encourage more farmers to grow peas, despite the fact that prices are the lowest they’ve been in 20 years.
However, some farmers, like Paul Kanning, worry about the staying power of plant-based foods. “I wonder sometimes if it’s going to be a short term demand,” he says.
