New data from Nielsen has revealed that 98 percent of customers who buy meat alternatives purchase traditional meat as well, reports Progressive Grocer. These “flexitarians” account for 37 percent of total meat-alternative buyers and spend an average of $643 on meat every year.
Nielsen also reported that the percentage of U.S. households buying meat alternatives increased 1.6 percent in the last year to 21.6 percent. In total, meat sales accounted for $95 billion in sales over the past year, whereas meat alternatives are still growing, representing only $893 million. Full Story
