Plant-Based Growth Led By Milk Alternatives

According to an update by the Good Food Institute, sales of plant-based foods in the U.S. increased by 11 percent in 2018, reports the Star Tribune. Alternative milks made from oats or almonds saw the most growth, whereas plant-based egg substitutes are just getting off the ground.

Category innovation has led to new products that are appealing to more than just vegetarians and vegans. “We are seeing these numbers grow as retailers make these merchandising shifts and taking them out of the sad vegetarians corners,” says Caroline Bushnell, GFI’s associate director of corporate engagement.
