The CDC has released a food safety alert for consumers Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island regarding a salmonella outbreak connected to whole, fresh papayas from Mexico.
Sixty-two people have reported being infected with the disease, with illness starting on dates ranging from January 14 to June 8, 2019. During the ongoing investigation, the FDA strongly advises importers, suppliers, and distributors, as well as restaurants, retailers, and other food service providers from all states to hold whole, fresh papayas imported from Mexico.
