Regional grocers were rated the top supermarkets for customer satisfaction, according to a Consumer Reports survey. Central Market, Wegmans, Heinen's, Gelson's Markets, and Market Basket received top marks, while Trader Joe's was the only national chain to earn a top overall satisfaction score. After price, produce quality and variety of goods are among the most important factors in choosing where to shop. Trader Joe's and Market Basket gleaned top marks on competitive pricing.
No grocer received the top rating for the price of organic options, but a handful received high marks: national brands Aldi, Costco, and Trader Joe's, and regional names Fresh Thyme Farmers Market, Grocery Outlet, Natural Grocers, and Woodman's.
Central Market and Wegmans were the only stores to excel not only in produce quality, but also in produce variety, selection of healthy options, selection of locally produced products, and variety of international products or multicultural foods.
