Wineries Launch Climate Change Organization

California's Jackson Family Wines and Spain's Familia Torres winery joined forces to create International Wineries for Climate Action, reports Food & Wine.

"Our common goal is to move beyond conversations around the urgency of climate change by collaborating on scalable solutions to reduce our global industry's carbon footprint," says Katie Jackson, second-generation proprietor and SVP of corporate responsibility for Jackson Family Wines.

Under the organization, the two wineries committed to reduce carbon emissions by 80 percent by 2045. To achieve that goal, they are working to establish an emissions baseline and then will create a way to track progress. With those two components in place, the organization will rely on a science-based approach to reducing emissions and aims to have participating wineries generate at least 20 percent renewable energy onsite.

In addition to getting wineries to make emission reduction commitments, International Wineries for Climate Action is hoping to become a collaborative platform for vineyards to share best practices that have proven successful. Full Story
