United Natural Foods Inc. plans to sell Shoppers Food & Pharmacy in 2019, reports The Baltimore Sun. The company has "no immediate plans for any Shoppers stores to close," according to a company spokesperson. In addition, UNFI plans to sell the Cub Foods chain. UNFI's "goal is to thoughtfully and economically divest the retail banners" allowing it to focus on its wholesale business.
The president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 400 wrote a letter to UNFI's CEO demanding the company provide more information about the sale. He claims, "Our members have been the backbone of Shoppers stores for far longer than UNFI has had any interest in those starts.... They deserve to know what the future holds." Full Story
