Two Labels Are Better Than One

Because of widespread confusion related to “Use By” labels, Americans unnecessarily throw out perfectly good food. The Grocery Manufacturers Association joined with the Food Marketing Institute to develop two streamlined options: “BEST If Used By” and “USE By.” Since launching in 2017, 87 percent of products now carry these clearer labels, and 88 percent of consumers surveyed say they make more sense. To help even more, GMA launched its #10ItemsLess campaign, challenging Americans to throw away 10 less items than they did in 2018, with the hopes of making a big impact on food waste.
