Walmart plans to launch an Intelligent Retail Lab inside its store in Levittown, N.Y., reports TechCrunch. The lab will test both associate and customer experiences, such as using artificial intelligence to better identify when items are running low on stock. Walmart envisions using the technology to identify spills, better understand when shopping carts are running low near the entrance, and identify when items are on the wrong shelf.
Walmart is already testing new concepts like mobile checkout, a camera system for inventory management, electronic shelf labels, and other technologies at Sam's Club, but it plans to use this new project to test a wide range of capabilities inside a grocery store, rather than a warehouse club. Walmart has not yet launched the lab, but began installing hardware, software, and the other necessary equipment to thoroughly test the technology. Full Story
