Prices for Romaine Unpredictable as Product Returns

Romaine lettuce prices are in flux as the product returns to market, reports The Produce News. Salinas, Calif.-based Coastline Family Farms argues strong pricing was expected before health warnings as many growers reduced winter plantings due to prior poor markets over the past 12 months. South Bay, Fla.-based Hugh Branch Inc. notes romaine will become more available on the East Coast the week of Dec. 2.

Robby Carter of Hugh H. Branch notes all lettuces are receiving a bump as retailers and foodservice operators look for alternatives. Mark McBride of Coastline says on Nov. 27, Iceberg lettuce from California and Arizona had a price tag of $44 to $48 f.o.b., while the leafy greens were in the low $40s and spinach was in the high $20s. Full Story
