The James Beard Foundation will change its rules and regulations to make the awards more inclusive and diverse, reports The New York Times. One of the most notable changes is that the volunteer committees that govern which restaurants, chefs, media outlets, and publications are nominated for medals will aim to be at least as diverse as the U.S. population, and the groups of judges who vote on winners will face a similar mandate. The committees won't remove members to achieve racial and gender parity, but rather will fill vacancies or expand the committees to increase diversity.
In addition, the leadership awards, which focus on issues of food justice, public health, and sustainable practices, are undergoing a modest renovation. Instead of selecting winners from a list generated by both a standing committee and previous winners, the awards will allow the public to nominate people. For the first time, winners will receive $10,000, according to the report. Full Story
