Sanders is being acquired by fellow Detroit-born snack maker, Kar's Nut Products Co., reports Crain's Detroit Business. Kar's Nuts acquired Sanders' owner Morley Candy Makers LLC. Together they will create a snacks and candy maker with an expected $185 million in total annual sales. The integration means a national distribution push for Sanders' candy and focusing less on its Michigan storefronts. Both ship products across the country, but Kar's has a more vast distribution network. Shoppers can find its nuts and mixes in over 70 different stores or chains.
Sanders expands the trail mix maker's product line from relatively healthful snacks to what Kar's President Nick Nicolay is calling the premium indulgent space. Morley CEO Brian Jefferson says the company wants to make Sanders "America's confectioner." Kar's will initially focus on candy distribution. It delivers to around 4,000 stores in Michigan alone and is looking specifically at Sanders' caramel mini-bites - one of its most prevalent grab-and-go offerings, according to the report. Full Story
