Craft Brewers Experiment With Tea Blends

Some brewers are looking beyond the trend of coffee-infused craft beer to another favorite source of caffeine, reports Crain's Chicago Business. Tea is the most widely consumed drink in the world after water and the subject of interest for people like Tim Lange, lead brewer at Chicago's Marz Community Brewing. When the organization started in 2014, a member of the group of home-brewing friends shared a wheat ale he had made with a blend of teas. It was well-received by the founding team, who set out to scale it up for commercial production.

Financially, it wasn't easy. "We discovered that sometimes the exotic ingredients and recipes that can make incredible home brews to share with friends at the cost of the home-brewer don't parlay into a great business model," Lange says. South African rooibos tea was selected for its heat tolerance, but sourcing can be a challenge when the fields dry out. Despite the obstacles, the final recipe, dubbed Jungle Boogie, remains one of Marz Community Brewing's most acclaimed and popular beers, according to the report. Full Story
