University of Minnesota Studying Food Waste

The University of Minnesota is doing a six-week study on consumers' food waste and organics disposal habits, reports Twin Cities Pioneer Press. The goal is to determine what types of food go uneaten in homes and what factors contribute to food being wasted, which local officials hope to utilize to inform future organics-collection efforts.

Participating households were given educational materials on the issue of food waste prior to the study. Researchers will examine whether the materials influence residents’ disposal habits. The aim is to understand how people process that information and if that has any meaningful impact on behavior, says Vanee Dusoruth, a doctoral candidate in applied economics who is leading the study, according to the report.
