Companies are using the term "plant-based" to replace "vegan" and "vegetarian" on some foods to make them more appealing to mainstream consumers. Impossible Foods CEO Pat Brown says, for many people, their notion of vegan is someone who's wagging a finger at them if they eat any animal products. The company, whose meatless burger is served at about 3,000 locations including White Castle, warns restaurants not to use those words when describing the burger on menus.
In addition, Beyond Meat, another meatless patty maker, pushes to have its products sold in the meat sections of supermarkets, rather than in what the company calls the "penalty box" of the frozen vegetarian foods section, while Just Inc.'s liquid egg substitute will be sold alongside cartons of eggs. The egg substitute's bottle will say it is "made from plants," without including the word "vegan." This shift in language is due to plant-based becoming more associated with foods that actually taste good, says Just CEO Josh Tetrick.
As the term becomes more popular, the Plant-Based Foods Association sees a bigger need to develop a more specific definition for "plant-based" to avoid confusion among consumers, reports CBS News. Full Story
