This spring, 7-Eleven will begin operating convenience store locations throughout Japan without storefront staff, reports Nikkei Asia.
The convenience chain is selecting locations that it has found difficult to keep open in the past, including inside tower condominiums and factories.
The retailer will begin opening the experimental stores in Tokyo and is already in negotiations with 20 companies interested in working with the chain to incorporate stores on their premises, according to the article.
The locations will be operated by a single employee responsible for stocking products and ordering. Customers will use a dedicated app to scan a QR code upon entering the store. They will then scan the items they wish to purchase and pay directly through their smartphone.
The new stores will have a smaller footprint and stock a maximum of 1,200 products, less than half of a typical 7-Eleven. They will offer chilled boxed lunches, coffee, and daily necessities. Full Story
