Stew Leonard of the specialty grocery chain with the same name issued a video statement, Wednesday, in reaction to the death of a woman in her 20s who died after eating a Stew Leonard’s Vanilla Florentine cookie containing undeclared peanuts.
“We bought it from an outside supplier and unfortunately this supplier changed the recipe from soy nuts to peanuts and our chief safety officer here at Stew Leonard’s was never notified,” he said. “We have a very vigorous process as far as labeling and we take labels very seriously, especially peanuts, and our chief safety officer was never notified, we didn’t change the label, hence we sold over 500 packages of these cookies over the holidays. Unfortunately this one customer purchased them and had a fatal experience…We’re just all devastated and very sad.”
Cookies United, supplier of the cookie, said in a statement that it did notify Stew Leonard's of the recipe change. “We need to point out that Stew Leonard’s was notified by Cookies United in July of 2023 that this product now contains peanuts and all products shipped to them have been labeled accordingly. This product is sold under the Stew Leonard’s brand and repackaged at their facilities. The incorrect label was created by, and applied to, their product by Stew Leonard’s.”
The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection Food, Standards and Product Safety Division and the Connecticut Department of Public Health is warning the public about the cookies that were sold at Stew Leonard’s grocery stores in Danbury and Newington, Connecticut. Stew Leonard’s has issued a recall for the Florentine Cookies.
