USDA Celebrates National Pollinator Week

USDA is recognizing National Pollinator Week, which runs through June 25, through its commitment to and support of pollinator health and research, according to USDA.

Pollinator species, such as bees, other insects, birds, and bats play a critical role in producing more than 100 crops grown in the U.S. Honeybee pollination alone adds more than $18 billion in value to agricultural crops annually.

“Our world's ecosystem and food supply greatly rely on pollinators–without them, many of our nation's crops wouldn't be able to produce as many fruits, nuts, or vegetables resulting in lower supplies and higher prices,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, in a statement. “Healthy pollinator populations are essential to the continued success and well-being of agricultural producers, rural America, and the entire U.S. economy.”

USDA honors pollinators’ critical role in agriculture and supports pollinator health through research, data collection, diagnostic services, monitoring, pollinator habitat enhancement programs, and pollinator health investments. USDA will release the “2023 Annual Strategic Pollinator Priorities Report” later this year outlining USDA pollinator research and programmatic priorities, focusing both on managed and wild pollinators.

Southeastern Grocers is also celebrating National Pollinator Week by advocating for the protection of essential pollinators.

“Our commitment to advancing pollinator-friendly practices is deeply ingrained in our vision for a better future," said Steve Williams VP of produce and floral at Southeastern Grocers, in a statement. “By partnering with our valued supplier partners, we can leverage our collective strengths to drive real change and create stronger communities. Together, we will continue to develop initiatives that promote sustainable products and contribute to a more viable world for future generations.”

In recognition of National Pollinator Week, the grocer is highlighting Sunkist Growers. With a commitment to pollinator conservation, Sunkist has implemented innovative practices that prioritize pollinator health and contribute to the preservation of their habitats, according to the retailer.
