In commemoration of Earth Month, H-E-B has announced its commitment to reducing waste and maximizing recycling efforts across its business and throughout Texas.
The grocer has launched multiple initiatives to support plastic waste reduction among its customers, such as replacing single-use plastic bags with sustainable alternatives.
The company also accepts plastic items from customers when picking up their Curbside orders or shopping in-store. H-E-B ensures these items are recycled at its recycling center, according to the company. Some accepted items include retail shopping bags, produce bags, bread bags, dry cleaning bags, newspaper bags, and plastic overwraps, such as plastic packaging for toilet paper. From the plastic collected, the grocer makes products such as Field & Future by H-E-B trash bags and bags for recyclables, which are made from up to 65 percent post-consumer plastic and 30 percent recycled plastic.
In support of community recycling efforts, H-E-B, in partnership with Keep Texas Recycling, has selected six projects across the state, which will benefit from the 2023 H-E-B Community Recycling Grants. These grants support projects that focus on increasing access to recycling by funding infrastructure improvements, material resources, and access to educational recycling materials.
To further embrace its continuing commitment to sourcing from Texas businesses, select H-E-B stores in Austin will host Austin Community Markets, giving customers a unique experience that supports the environment and local community by showcasing local suppliers.
