Giant Food Launches Electric Vehicle Delivery

Giant Food has announced the deployment of two new, fully electric delivery vehicles. The electric step-vans join the company’s fleet of 128 vehicles making deliveries throughout Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware.

The new vehicles are made possible by a Clean Fuels Incentive Program grant awarded to Giant. The program is designed to create greener transportation methods within Maryland. Over the vehicles’ lifetime, they are expected to displace over 210,000 gallons of petroleum and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 63 percent.

"Cleaner transportation is part of Giant's larger sustainability efforts and commitment to supporting the local environment," said Joe Urban, vice president of distribution operations at Giant Food, in a statement. "We are excited to bring these vehicles into our Giant Delivers fleet and kick off the transition to all-electric delivery."

The vehicles were purchased from Motiv Power Systems, a Silicon Valley all-electric truck and bus company. The vehicles produce zero emissions and operate more quietly, all while providing the same grocery storage capacity.
