Big Apple Bites: Citizens New York

The upscaling of Manhattan’s Far West Side continues with Citizens New York, a globally inspired, 40,000-square-foot food hall and restaurant venue that opened in October 2021. Founded by C3, a food tech platform, it’s part of Brookfield’s new Manhattan West office and retail space and steps from the office towers and dining options of Hudson Yards and the Javits Center, home of the Summer Fancy Food Show.

The 12 food concepts at Citizens Market are geared toward professionals in search of fast, inventive eats in the $10-$20 range. Vendors include Soom Soom Fresh, which makes hummus, shawarma, kebobs, and other Mediterranean fare. El Pollo Verde serves up organic roast chicken sandwiches and bowls from Michelin Star-winning Spanish chef Dani Garcia. Plant Nation puts together build-your-own protein and grain bowls, plus rotisserie baby cauliflower. Sam’s Crispy Chicken offers six chicken sandwich options as well as sides and specialty boxes. Cicci de Carne is the go-to for hot and cold sandwiches stuffed with porchetta, burrata, and other Italian delicacies courtesy of Tuscan butcher Dario. Krispy Rice has an a la carte menu of handrolls and specialty cut maki rolls, along with vegetarian options. On the sweet side, Cindy Lou’s sells a creative variety of oversized cookies. Each runs $5.50, and they’re easily shareable.

Besides these fast casual spots, Citizens New York features two sit-down restaurants. The menu at Dani Garcia’s Casa Dani is inspired by Spain’s Mediterranean region. Katsuya, meanwhile, is chef Uechi Katsuya’s first East Coast restaurant venture; the menu melds Japanese fare with California style cuisine. S Bar, a cocktail lounge, offers drinks and small bites from Katsuya.

The space has a clean, futuristic vibe—the lighting is dim, aisles are wide, and colorful digital displays and menu boards make the offerings easy to navigate. Seating inside the hall consists of spacious and inviting couches, chairs, and counters. Many of the individual food brands have their own seating as well, and there’s plenty of room on benches for al fresco dining on the plaza high above the street.

In a hurry? Digital kiosks allow customers to order food without actually standing in line or going to the counter. Citizens New York also maintains Citizens Go Stall, a separate grab and go section for fresh premade sandwiches, bowls, and salads. There’s also a free Go by Citizens app (for Apple and Android) that lets you place your order for pickup or delivery.
