CA Proposition Allows Companies to Classify Workers as Contractors

California Proposition 22 has been passed, meaning that third-party delivery services like Instacart, Postmates, and DoorDash may continue to classify workers as independent contractors, reports Progressive Grocer. This law acts as an exemption for California’s Assembly Bill 5, which went into effect earlier this year, requiring third-party companies to classify workers as employees. 

Supporters of Prop 22 say that the measure would save jobs, preserve worker flexibility, and protect vulnerable communities that would be at risk of reduced service levels. However, opponents say that this will harm workers by not requiring employers to provide them with healthcare and other employment benefits. Full Story
