Wineries Make Up Lost Revenue By Offering Campsites

Wineries that are unable to host in-person events due to COVID are making up revenue by converting land to campsites, reports CNBC.

Hickman Family Vineyards, a small family winery in northern California, uses Hipcamp, a startup likened to Airbnb for camp sites, to rent out tent or RV space for about $50 a night. Alyse Hickman, who founded the winery in 2002 with her husband, estimates her Hipcamp revenue is up 50 percent over last year even though overall business is down by 75 percent.

“They’re keeping us afloat so I can at least pay my bills,” she said. “A lot of people are coming back for a second or third time, which is great, and they’re bringing their friends.”

99 Bottles Winery & Vineyard, which is located in central Iowa, has also been able to make money from tent and RV campers. Owner Mark Newman says that camping represents about 40 percent of his revenue now, up from 20 percent a year ago.

Newman’s seven campsites have been booked almost solid throughout the pandemic. The winery offers private wine tastings for adults in the evenings and plenty of room for kids to run around, making it a perfect place for families. Full Story
