Starting this month, Tops Friendly Markets will pilot Flashfood, an interactive in-store food waste program at six locations. Flashfood allows customers to purchase food items, including produce, meat, deli, bakery, and dairy products, that are nearing their sell-by date for up to 50 percent off. Tops will post flash sales of its surplus food items on the Flashflood app, which customers can purchase directly on the app and then collect at the designated Tops location.
“At Tops, social responsibility and sustainability have always been at the core of our mission, upholding standards that ensure we reduce environmental waste and energy consumption while providing customers with sustainably sourced, high-quality products, at a great value,” said Jeff Culhane, senior vice president of sales and merchandising for Tops, in a statement. “The Flashfood program fits right into our business model and we’re excited to bring this unique, money saving opportunity to our customers.”
