Contaminated red onions are the likely source of a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Newport infections resulting in 396 illnesses and 59 hospitalizations, according to an investigation by the FDA, which has also identified Thomson International, Inc. of Bakersfield, California as the likely source of the onions.
Thomson International has notified the FDA that it will be recalling all varieties of onion that could have come in contact with the potentially contaminated red onions, due to the risk of cross-contamination. This recall would include red, white, yellow, and sweet onions from Thomson International, Inc. Recall information will be made public as soon as it is available from Thomson International, Inc.
The most affected states include Oregon with 71 cases of illness, Utah with 61 cases, and California with 49 cases. In addition, the Public Health Agency of Canada stated that as of August 2, there were 120 confirmed cases in the country and 17 people have been hospitalized.
