Albertsons Cos. to Offer Vertical Farm Produce

Albertsons Cos. is partnering with vertical farming company Plenty Unlimited Inc. to provide shoppers in more than 430 stores across California with Plenty’s fresh produce. Using data analytics and machine learning, Plenty’s indoor vertical farm is able to deliver produce all year long, while using less than 1 percent of the land and 5 percent of the water compared to traditional farming.

Stores will carry four Plenty products initially, including baby arugula, baby kale, crispy lettuce, and mizuna mix. Plenty is currently available in select Safeway and Andronico's locations in the Bay Area, with plans to expand to additional Albertsons Cos. stores in California – including Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions – as supply increases.

“We pride ourselves on offering fresh, quality products that surprise and delight our customers,” said Geoff White, EVP of merchandising, in a statement. “Plenty’s data-driven and sustainable methods are truly innovative, and we look forward to bringing their unique and exciting products to more customers in California as they scale their operations.”
