Danny Meyer will convert three of his restaurant venues into community kitchens to help prepare meals for food-insecure residents in South Bronx, reports Nation’s Restaurant News. The program is a partnership between Meyer’s New York-based Union Square Hospitality Group; Brookfield Properties, which has committed $1 million to support the effort; and Rethink Food, a nonprofit that reclaims unused food from restaurants to feed those in need.
The goal of the program is to prepare 125,000 meals to be distributed by Rethink in the South Bronx area. It will allow USHG to rehire up to 20 workers and reactivate restaurants that have been closed since March, including Marta, Intersect by Lexus, and catering kitchen Union Square Events.
Meyer says this will help USHG employees get ready for reopening to the public. “We really want to activate our kitchens,” he said. “I don’t want to start from a crouch position. This is our version of spring training.” Full Story
