Stores Struggle to Enforce Mask Policy

At a time when major food retailers such as Walmart, Target, Kroger, and Publix are requiring that shoppers wear masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19, enforcement of such policies has become an issue with some employees being told that they cannot force those who refuse, reports The New York Times.

As part of his job as "health ambassador,” Walmart employee Christopher Vanderpool, who works at a Fayetteville, North Carolina Walmart for $11 an hour, asks customers to put on their masks before entering the store. Although many comply, the 18-year-old said that some “will say ‘No, I am not wearing that garbage,’ or some expletive. Everyone is so tense. I would be scared to confront people.”

Walmart has told employees that they should not prevent a customer from entering the store if they refuse to wear a mask. Walgreens said that “for the safety of our team members” the company would not prevent customers without masks, and Lowes likewise said it would “not ask our associates to put their safety at risk by confronting customers about wearing masks,” according to the report.
