Egg Prices Soar, Fall with Consumer Demand

Egg prices are rising and falling rapidly amid the COVID-19 pandemic, reports Food Business News. Prices rose in early March as customers stocked up in order to shelter-in-place; some sources say that demand for products aimed at grocery stores surged as much as 200 percent. However, in the two weeks following April 3, Grade A large egg prices dropped 30 percent, and had continued to fall almost daily last week.

These low prices have created buying opportunities. However, Brian Moscoguiri, director of U.S. and E.U. egg and egg product markets at Urner Barry, a poultry, seafood, and meat price reporting and news service, warns that it may not last forever. “There is a tremendous opportunity to purchase eggs to help alleviate the surplus and take advantage of low prices if you can produce for retail,” he said. “It’s a great buying opportunity, but extreme markets tend not to last too long.” Full Story
