Meat department sales were up 76.9 percent during week ending March 15 versus the year before, according to research from IRI and the National Chicken Council. This includes sales of fresh beef, chicken, pork, turkey, lamb, and smoked meats. Deli meat sales increased by 40.4 percent versus the year prior.
“As the number of school closures, social distancing guidelines, and other COVID-19 related measures significantly sharpened the subsequent week, sales surged along with it,” said the National Chicken Council in a statement on its website. “Thanks to the heroic efforts of everyone in the meat and poultry industry, the supply kept flowing. Retailers restocked their meat cases again and again as shoppers across the country stocked up on meat and poultry to feed their families nutritious meals.”
