José Andrés’s World Central Kitchen Is on Site to Feed Quarantined Cruise Passengers in California

The World Central Kitchen is ready to handle another disaster

The passengers of the Grand Princess cruise ship, 21 of which have tested positive for the new coronavirus, are disembarking in Oakland on Monday, and chef José Andrés and World Central Kitchen are on the ground to feed them. The chef tweeted that WCK is sending food supplies to the ship, and is preparing meals for guests and crew that will be quarantined again after disembarking.

In a later tweet, Andrés said he “can not believe we still don’t have a protocol in place” for feeding people affected by the outbreak.

Meanwhile, festival organizers on the other side of the country have turned a cancelation over coronavirus concerns into something useful: It was recently decided that the Arnold’s Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio would be closed to general spectators, so food for the event — which includes egg salad sandwiches, vegetables, fruit, and brown rice — has been diverted to tornado victims in Nashville, Tennessee.

Both initiatives are generous ways to share resources in times of crisis, but as Trump continues to basically ignore the outbreak, they also highlight that the job of helping those in need is often left to private organizations or individuals acting out of the good of their own hearts. Which isn’t exactly the most reliable plan in the face of a global pandemics and natural disasters.
