Almost Half of Consumers Avoid Eating Out Due to Coronavirus

Forty-seven percent of consumers say they definitely avoided eating out due to the coronavirus outbreak in the four-day period leading up to March 18, according to research from Datassential. Twenty-nine percent reported they were nervous, but still eating out, and 24 percent reported they had no concerns whatsoever.

In addition, research revealed that 45 percent of consumers rank cleanliness as the number one consideration when selecting a restaurant, ahead of great taste at 36 percent.

In an open-ended question asking what consumers would do to gain public trust if they owned a restaurant, one 42-year old woman said, “I would explain how I am screening my staff for the coronavirus and training them in food safety/handling. I would show how I am disinfecting my work surfaces and keeping takeaway counters/containers free from the virus. I would minimize customers and unscreened people from coming to the premises and touching things.”
