Watch: Marcus Samuelsson Eats Through the Chinese Food Scene in Las Vegas

Follow along as Samuelsson learns about the history of Vegas’s Chinatown and tries hand-pulled noodles, Peking duck, and other dishes

In the fifth episode of No Passport Required Season 2, host Marcus Samuelsson visits Las Vegas to learn more about the city’s long-standing Chinese community and their food traditions. He makes hand-pulled noodles and Peking duck, and eats regional favorites from xiao long bao and beef noodle soup to cumin lamb and fish braised in clay pots. Marcus also learns about the traditions of herbal medicine and teas prevalent in the community, and watches Chinese musicians play the drums and dance in a rehearsal before enjoying a home-cooked meal with the dancers and their families.

Additional episodes: Each hour-long episode focuses on a different immigrant community in a new city: In addition to Las Vegas, the series travels to Seattle, where Marcus cooks with a Filipino community eager to preserve its food traditions while using key ingredients like ube and vinegar to create new ones; Los Angeles, home to the largest Armenian community outside of Armenia; and Houston, home to one of the highest numbers of West African expatriates of any U.S. city. Other episodes focus on the Italian-American community in Philadelphia, which has thrived for generations, and Boston (February 17), where Marcus explores Portuguese-speaking cultures and cuisines from three locales: Brazil, Cape Verde, and Portugal. The episodes air weekly on PBS, and all are now available for streaming.
