SpartanNash is piloting the Flashfood mobile app at five locations in West Michigan. The app allows customers and community nonprofit organizations to purchase meat, produce, seafood, deli, and bakery items nearing their best-by date at up to 50 percent off.
“Customer convenience is key with the app—and so is our ability to reduce food waste while increasing access to lower-cost fresh foods,” said Matt Bennett, director, retail consumer innovation at SpartanNash, in a statement. “Our aisles are filled with a variety of perishable foods, and as we get near the best-by dates, we want to make sure customers know about the savings available to them. This app is a win-win for customers and the environment.”
