Reusable Cup Pilots Begin in California

Pilot programs to test two types of “smart” reusable cups will begin this week at independent coffee shops in the San Francisco area, reports Bloomberg. The cups are a result of a project known as the NextGen Cup Challenge, which was led by Starbucks and McDonald’s.

Cups from startup Muuse will be piloted in San Francisco. Each cup has a distinct QR code, which customers can scan when they pick up and drop off cups. In Palo Alto, cups from CupClub will be piloted. These cups are embedded with RFID tags, which can be scanned as they are used in coffee shops or as they are returned at designated drop-off points.

“This technology for tech-enabled reusable cups didn’t exist five years ago,” says Bridget Croke, managing director at Closed Loop Partners, a recycling-focused private equity firm that helped to coordinate the NextGen Cup Challenge. Full Story
