Harmons Grocery Aims to Overturn Tax Changes

Harmons Grocery aims to overturn recent changes to Utah’s tax laws, which would increase the rate on groceries from 1.75 percent to 4.85 percent, by opening its 19 stores across the state for people to sign the Utah 2019 Tax Referendum, reports Winsight Grocery Business.

Through Jan. 21, the retailer brought in volunteers for the Utah 2019 Tax Referendum to staff tables in the store, along with Harmon employees, to assist with signature witnessing. Utah’s referendum law required that supporters collect more than 115,000 signatures by Jan 21, including 8 percent of registered voters in at least 15 of Utah’s 29 counties, in order to qualify for the ballet, according to the report.
