Giant Eagle to Eliminate Single Use Plastics by 2025

Giant Eagle has pledged that it will eliminate single-use plastics in its operations by 2025 as part of its strategic sustainability platform. Initially, Giant Eagle will focus on eliminating single-used plastic bags, and will eventually move on to other single-use items like straws, food containers, bottled beverages and more.

The retailer will start by phasing out plastic bags in three markets in January 2020. For six months, customers in Pittsburgh, Cuyahoga County, and Bexley, Ohio. “Consumers have power, and this move invites every shopper to have a positive impact,” said Joylette Portlock, Ph.D., executive director of Sustainable Pittsburgh, a non-profit partnering with Giant Eagle to roll out the test in Pittsburgh, in a statement. “Giant Eagle is demonstrating leadership in identifying solutions for how to reduce plastic waste here in the Pittsburgh region, and is considering the right factors during this pilot. We also applaud and support the company’s larger sustainability commitment to our community.”
