Amazon Tests Hand Scanning Payment Technology

Amazon is testing scanners that can identify an individual human hand to ring up purchases, reports the New York Post. The goal would be to roll them out at Whole Foods locations in the coming months. The system would allow customers with Amazon Prime accounts to scan their hands at the store and link them to a credit or debit card.

These scanners are different from fingerprint scanners and don’t require users to physically touch the scanning surface. Instead, they use computer vision and depth geometry to process and identify the shape and size of each hand. Currently, Amazon employees at the New York office are currently testing the scanners, using it to buy items from vending machines on campus. Full Story
