Proposed Rule Could Tighten SNAP Eligibility for Millions

The Agriculture Department has issued a proposed rule that will tighten the rules as to who qualifies for food stamps, reports CNN. The rule would curtail broad-based categorial eligibility, which makes it easier for Americans with somewhat higher incomes and more savings to participate in SNAP, the formal name for food stamps.

If passed, this rule could strip more than three million people of their benefits. Republicans have long argued that this eligibility option is a “loophole,” but consumer advocates say otherwise. The option is "an opportunity-oriented policy to promote work and promote savings," said Stacy Dean, vice president for food assistance at the left-leaning Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
