The latest proposal from the Department of Agriculture to crack down on eligibility for food stamps would make more than 500,000 children ineligible for free school meals, reports NBC News. If passed, 3.1 million Americans would lose benefits.
Under the current law, children whose families receive food stamps are automatically enrolled in the federal program that offers free breakfast and lunch at school. However, if the proposal is passed families would need to individually apply for meal assistance, which would create paperwork requirements that lead to children falling through the cracks.
