San Francisco Bans Cashless Stores

San Francisco officials have voted to ban cashless brick-and-mortar stores, reports Puget Sound Business Journal. The ban is slated to go into effect within 30 days.

The move is expected to have significant consequences for Amazon, which has been expanding its footprint of cashierless Go stores throughout the city. An Amazon spokesperson says the company is working to accept cash at San Francisco Amazon Go stores. At its location in New York, the company will accept cash by hiring associates to scan customers in rather than having customers gain entry by scanning their smartphones with the Amazon Go app. Shoppers can then check out with a Go employee similar to a traditional store, or walk out of the turnstiles and request the retailer bill their Amazon account.

Legislation to ban cashless stores was initially introduced in February and excluded Amazon Go, food trucks, pop ups, and other storefronts that didn't staff employees to handle cash. District Supervisor Vallie Brown revised the proposal to include Amazon on the basis that the company could afford it. Similar legislation has been passed in Philadelphia and New Jersey, where Amazon has not yet opened Go storefronts. Full Story
