Gruppo Lactalis Italia, part of multinational dairy company Lactalis, has acquired Nuova Catelli, a producer and distributor of specialty Italian cheese, from Charterhouse Capital Partners. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Headquartered in Reggio Emilia, Italy, Nuova Castelli says it is the largest exporter of specialty Italian cheese and food products to European blue-chip retail chains and other food retailers. The company's core business is focused primarily on premium, private-label Italian Protected Designation of Origin cheese products, including Parmigiano Reggiano, Grana Padano, and Gorgonzola. Nuova Castelli operates approximately 20 plants in Italy and abroad, and employs more than 1,000 people.
Charterhouse acquired Nuova Castelli in 2014 from its founder. Under the firm's ownership, the company grew its international footprint, expanded distribution with new retailers and made acquisitions, including Empire Specialty Cheese in the U.S., Alival in Italy, and North Coast in Poland.
