KFC is meeting with plant-based protein makers to discuss options for the chain, according to KFC's U.S. president Kevin Hochman, reports Business Insider. "In the last two weeks I've made several appointments with some of the big guys, just to figure out—what does alternative protein look like in chicken?," says Hochman. He notes if the current buzz around companies like Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat translates to long-term customer demand, KFC will test a plant-based meat substitute in the U.S. Full Story
Meanwhile, McDonald's is monitoring the plant-based market to determine whether this type of product will bring in new customers or appeal to its existing base, reports CNBC. "I don't think it's faddish," says CEO Steve Easterbook. "Whether it maintains the same level of buzz is what's interesting."
