Craft Beer Makers Launch Novel Flavors

Those looking for a steak and onion Kolsch or a macaroni and cheese pale ale would be satisfied at the Strange Brew Festival in Reno, Nev., reports New York Post. The festival serves as a spotlight for craft breweries, and in recent years, these companies have worked to distinguish themselves via unique flavors, including peanut butter and pickle pilsners, tamale lagers, and smoked carrot stouts.

Some brewers see the head-turning brews as a way to attract customers to their staple products, while others believe the products shouldn't be labeled beer at all. However, most think the industry governs itself. "It has to be flavorful. It has to taste like beer," says Hal McConnellogue, cellar manager at San Leandro, California-based Drake's Brewing Co. "It's got to make you want another one. If it doesn't, then it's just gimmicky and you're going to be out of the spotlight pretty fast." Full Story
